Sex Therapy


SEX AND LOVE

Our sexuality is integral to who we are as human beings.  It is a personal expression of ourselves and when it does not go well there is often a sense of loss and devastation around the challenges of intimacy that can lead to sexual dysfunction. 

 

Individuals or couples can participate in sex therapy to deal with sexual confusion, discomfort with their sexuality, and compulsive sexual behaviors or affairs.  Many couples seek sex therapy to address issues related to desire and intimacy.

Given the nature of sex therapy, it is sometimes slow and complex.  However, it can be effective in reawakening your sexual self and improving the quality of your relationships and overall sense of well being.

Sexual Addiction / Love Addiction - Although there is much discussion and hype about sex and love addictions, the fact is that overuse of sexual behaviors that feel shameful or are abusive can become problematic if you are unable to stop despite negative consequences.  These behaviors might include use of prostitutes, prolonged use of pornography, chronic masturbation, anonymous sex or serial/multiple affairs.  They may also include excessive flirtation, preoccupation with sexual conquests, risk taking, and one night stands.  Many of these behaviors are not problematic, in and of themselves,  unless you are unable to stop despite negative consequences or they are getting in the way of your daily functioning at work and home.  These behaviors are often steeped in a deep sense of shame, intensity, power, anxiety and confusion.

We can work together to develop a plan of recovery.  This usually involves a contract that we develop to manage the behaviors, insight based therapy around trauma and anxiety to understand the root causes.  Your plan may include participation in a 12 - step program or group.
